Since the advent of the Internet, we have seen just how important it is for our children to use Internet safety tips to help keep them safe from predators. There have been many cases of children being lured by sexual predators after online meetings and the fact is that all of the crimes that have been committed against minors could have been prevented using Internet safety tips. Parents need to realize what a perfect environment the Internet is for someone trying to lure young children. A predator can become anything that he wants when he is online, the most common guise being that they pretend to be someone about the same age as their potential prey. But, there are also many other ploys that the bad guys will us and so we have to prepare our children for anything using a few basic Internet safety tips.
Internet safety tips that should always be out in the open
On this page we will list a few Internet safety tips that we feel will get you off on the right track towards good Internet safety. We suggest that every family write out all of the rules for Internet use and have them displayed next to the computer at all times.
- Keep the computer in a common room, one that is open and accessible to all members of the family. This way your children will be less likely to go onto unapproved sites or engage in other dubious activities.
- Spend some quality time with them frequently online, let them show you the sites that they like to visit the most and also have them tell you about any friends that they chat with or e-mail.
- Let them know that if they ever get an e-mail that scares them in any way or makes them uncomfortable, that they should tell you or a teacher right away.
- Tell them to never give out such personal information as their telephone number, address, full name, or school name, unless you tell them that it is ok.
- They should also never send out a picture of themselves or any of the family.
- They should never meet with anyone that they met online without a parent with them.
- As parents, we should consider using one of the many filtering and monitoring software that is available.
- Tell children not to give out their account passwords to their friends or other students when they are at school.
It might seem hard to believe that a few simple Internet safety tips can help to a save a life or keep your child out of a very bad situation, but they can and they do! A simple Internet safety tip or two can really help us to spot an Internet predator when we come across one.
