With the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami last year in Asia, the importance of evacuating floods has been so prominent.

If you live in a hurricane zone, you may have been under voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders. Many take heed of the warnings and many do not for a variety of reasons.

Thus new measures are being looked into worldwide on how to help people evacuating floods. No longer is it being seen as each for their own. Governments now have to take greater responsibility for their citizens who are evacuating floods. Early detection and action are important factors in weather safety and flood safety.

New Orleans residents were strongly urged to get out of New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina hit, however, many simply did not have the means to get out. Through physical or financial restrictions, many were forced to stay in their homes during the devastating hurricane and were trapped by rising flood waters. Thus evacuating floods has taken on a whole new meaning. The local and federal Governments faced a barrage of criticism from the press and people of New Orleans for not acting to help those in need. Simply telling people to evacuate floods is not enough, as many cannot do it on their own. There are currently new measures being drawn up to help people evacuating floods. Mass transportation needs to be set in place in plenty of time to get residents out of danger. Local and federal governments need to inform citizens on the issues of home safety and safety during extreme weather.

Making preparations

As we have seen through the devastating weather of 2005, we can never take the issue of safety lightly. We should all take steps to ensure that we will stay safe during any weather conditions that may come our way.

Make sure that you have a weather/disaster kit, ready, should you need it at any time. There are government sites instructing you on what to include in your disaster kit. There is no time like the present to get prepared, don't put it off!
