Flood Insurance

The year 2005 was a tough year for Americans. Hurricanes Wilma and Katrina had a huge impact on the lives of many. These deadly and destructive hurricanes caused widespread flooding and brought the issue of flood insurance to the forefront.

In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, many residents saw their houses destroyed by the hurricane and the flood waters that insured,. Many, who thought they were covered by flood insurance found that their home insurance did not actually cover them for flooding. Tragically, many of the worst effected are not covered by the proper insurance and face the permanent loss of their homes and all their belongings. The biggest part of weather safety is keeping yourself financially secure.

Flood insurance is vital!
As the natural disasters of this year have brought issues such as flood safety to the forefront, the importance of staying safe and how to avoid financial devastation through extreme weather circumstances, has never been more important.

Floods and flash floods happen in all 50 states
Homeowner's insurance doesn't cover flood damage
If you live in a Special Flood Hazard Area, your mortgage lender requires you to have flood insurance
New land development can increase risk of flooding, creating a whole host of home safety problems
It takes 30 days after purchase for a policy to take effect, so it's important to buy insurance before flooding happens

How to find good flood insurance
Many who do not have coverage against flooding are now seriously considering getting it. Better to be safe than sorry. With the hurricane season behind us, now is a good time to get prepared for next year, which is predicted to be a record breaking year.

Obtaining good flood insurance is easier said than done nowadays! As many insurance companies are inundated with claims, the last thing they want is to take on new customers. Sounds surprising, but with the influx of claims and storms, insurance companies are paying out record amounts to their customers, and are certainly not rushing to take on new customers in hurricane areas.

Flood insurance is crucial for many however, and if you are feeling frustrated by the lack of interest by insurance companies, there is help at hand.

FEMA has a website: floodsmart.gov, that will fill you in on all there is to know on safety during hurricanes and floods. Their site will refer you to Government sponsored agents that will arrange flood insurance for you.

So don't despair! Take the time now to get prepared for next year.
