Weather Safety
Weather safety - the best time to plan for weather safety is well in advance!
Weather Safety
The weather can make for a great day and it can also make for a disastrous situation. Every region of the country is faced with varying weather safety issues. What your Aunt has to worry about on the West coast, you might not even have to think about in the Midwest. The first step in preparing with weather safety is to be sure of all of the potential weather-related issues that are relevant to your part of the country.
Weather safety = preparation
Whatever the weather risk is in your neck of the woods, everyone in your family needs to know where they should go in the event of an emergency. Find out what the procedure is at your child's school is and then talk about the different weather safety scenarios that could play out so that your child does not panic when you are not there immediately. From hurricane safety to flood safety, people deal better with emergencies when they are prepared.
If you do get separated from your children and family when disaster strikes, you should have a plan in place with friends or other family members that reside outside of our area and can be contacted if need be. Everyone in the family needs to be aware of who this contact person is and how they can be reached. It is also a good idea to decide on a particular place where all members of the family can meet up again if they get separated.
The member of the family that is most likely to be left behind is the family pet. Many areas that are prone to such things as hurricanes and floods have places that animals can be taken. Ensure their safety too and find out in advance all the places that will be safe for your pet if the rest of the family has to leave. And always make sure that they are wearing a collar with their identification on it.
Put together plans based on the weather safety requirements for your region. Then talk about the plan and give it a few practice runs. Involve even the smallest members of the family in home safety and weather safety.
